PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording device and a controlling method for the maintenance by which the transfer to a maintenance program by a wrong operation is prevented from occurring, and at the same time, the transit to a maintenance state is simplified when the maintenance is started, and also, to provide a program renewing method by which the renewal of the maintenance program or the like is simplified. SOLUTION: This controlling method for the maintenance includes a step wherein an IC card 5 on which a maintenance program of a device 6 is written is attached, and a step wherein the maintenance program is read from the attached IC card.
