PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe that shortens tool indexing time and machining time while facilitating chip disposal. SOLUTION: A tool rest 2 having a hollow part 5 at the center is fixedly installed and fitted with a plurality of tools so that the cutting edges point to a center axis O1 of the hollow part 5. A spindle 3 for gripping a workpiece W is movable in orthogonal triaxial directions by a tool rest / spindle relative moving means 4, and the tools 6 are selected by the movement of the spindle 3. The tool rest / spindle relative moving means 4 moves the spindle 3 in a direction parallel to the spindle axis O1 (a Z-axis direction) to advance the workpiece W into the hollow part 5 of the tool rest 22 and to move the spindle within a plane perpendicular to a spindle axis O2 to select one optional tool 6 out of a plurality of tools 6 to thereby allow machining of the workpiece W. The tool rest 2 may be movable in the Z-axis direction or the triaxial directions instead of being fixed. Even in that case, turning indexing of the tool rest 2 is not performed.
