For a first image data set representing a first surface and a second image data set representing a second surface, the surfaces having substantially corresponding surface regions, a method of processing the image data to identify a set of substantially corresponding surface features of the surfaces, the method characterized by comprising the steps of: obtaining a feature vector processing template that is configured to structurally embody a plurality of surface feature vectors; embodying the processing template with a plurality of feature vectors selected from the first surface to thereby establish a configuration of feature vectors representing a portion of the first surface; and searching for the representative configuration of feature vectors on the second surface wherein the template is configured to embody the selected feature vectors in a structural configuration comprising a hinge part from which extend a plurality of the selected feature vectors.
