The lathe, with a raised machine frame (10) over the ground surface (12), has a slide system (20) to move the workpiece carrier (30) in relation to the frame. The lathe has two tool carriers (50,52) for two lathe tools (70,72), with at least one tool carrier having a movement in relation to the frame. The first tool carrier (50), has only two parallel movements (WX,WZ), and the second tool carrier (52) has only a lateral movement across the line of the first tool carrier. A control unit (90) sets the movements of the tool carriers and the workpiece carrier to give a selected turning action.
