A dilute solution of an organic hydroxy compound is concentrated by treating with an ionic exchanger impregnated with borax or boric acid which absorbs the solute, and this is redissolved in a smaller quantity of a neutral liquid. In examples, dilute solutions of phenols, sugars, and glycols are treated using as final solvent, aqueous solutions of sodium sulphate or chloride, or ammonium sulphate.ALSO:A dilute solution of an organic hydroxy compound is concentrated by treating the solution with an ion-exchanger impregnated with borax or boric acid, which absorbs the solute, and this is re-dissolved in a smaller quantity of a neutral liquid. In examples, sugar, glycol, sorbitol, glycerol, and phenol solutions are concentrated, e.g. a 1% solution of glucose in water is passed through an ion-exchange resin impregnated with a concentrated borax solution. The absorbed glucose is washed out with a dilute solution of sodium sulphate which then contains 13% of glucose. Other final solvents are sodium chloride, and ammonium sulphate solution, and solutions of substances which are analogous to the adsorbed substances, e.g. a solution of sorbitol may be used for the elution of adsorbed 1,2-propylene glycol. |
