PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which ensures high both-sided image productivity and is compact. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a plurality of first image carriers 10Y, 10C, 10M, and 10BK on which toner images of different colors are formed; an endless first image carrier belt 11 on which the toner images formed on the first image carriers are superimposed and transferred by a first primary transfer roller 6; a plurality of second image carriers 30Y, 30C, 30M, and 30BK on which toner images of different colors are formed; an endless second image carrier belt 31 on which the toner images formed on the second image carriers are superimposed and transferred by the second primary transfer roller 6; a first secondary transfer roller 17 by which the image held on the first image carrier belt is transferred to one side of a recording medium; a second secondary transfer charger 37 by which the image held on the second image carrier belt is transferred to the other side of the recording medium; and a fixing means 26 by which the image transferred to the recording medium is fixed to the recording medium.
