PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of preventing lighting of a discharge lamp from starting, by detecting a failure of filament parts connected in series. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a no load detecting circuit 109 to prevent lighting of the discharge lamp from starting when a failure in filaments F2, F3 forming the filament parts connected in series, poles 3, 4, and a connected part 7 is detected, when a power supply is applied, a filament failure detecting circuit 108 to stop supplying power for lighting when the failure of the filament parts connected in series is detected after starting the power supply for lighting to the discharge lamps FL2, FL3, and a dc voltage source 115 to start power supply for operation to the filament failure detecting circuit 108 after the power supply for lighting starts, so as to prevent the operation of the no load detecting circuit 109 from being impeded by a wrap-around current from the filament failure detecting circuit 108 to the no load detecting circuit 109.
