PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for generating a variable delay output from a high speed trigger input signal. SOLUTION: This variable delay generating circuit includes a precondition circuit and operates to be able to supply a precondition signal in accordance with an input signal. At least one tap path is connected to the precondition signal and operates to be able to supply a delayed version of the precondition signal. A delay path includes a delay element and a scaling circuit. An addition circuit is connected to at least one delay tap path and a precondition signal. The addition circuit operates to be able to supply an output signal indicating delay characteristics in accordance with the precondition signal and the delayed version of the precondition signal. High frequency variable delay is provided through combining the addition delay and the scaling version of the input signal and the precondition item of the input signal in order to have required rise/fall time and form.
