PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a plasma display panel which is high in luminance and high in contrast and can suppress a black float in particular. SOLUTION: The method for driving the plasma display panel has a surface substrate formed with a plurality of sustaining electrodes, and display electrodes constituted by first scanning electrodes and second scanning electrodes disposed adjacently to each other across the sustaining electrodes and performs control when writing of address data in such a manner the discharge of writing starts from either one of between the first scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes and between the second scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes by applying different potentials to the first scanning electrodes and the second second scanning electrodes. Also, the driving method performs control so as to apply a whole area initialization pulse to either one of the first scanning electrodes and the second scanning electrodes.
