PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce 1-butyl-4-piperidinylmethylamine through a two-stage process, without isolating an N-butyl derivative of 4-piperidinecaboxamide (N-butyl derivative of isonipecotamide). SOLUTION: A method for producing the 1-butyl-4-piperidinylmethylamine comprises (i) reacting 4-piperidinecarboxamide (isonipecotamamide) with 1-bromobutane, so as to obtain the N-butyl derivative of the 4-piperidinecarboxamide, and (ii) reducing the obtained derivative with LiAlH<SB>4</SB>, wherein the reactions (i) and (ii) are conducted in toluene as a solvent, and a reaction mixture after the reduction is treated with a warmed aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and further the mixture is extracted with an organic solvent.
