PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mercapto compound from a thioether compound using a low-toxic solvent. SOLUTION: A method for producing the mercapto compound is provided, comprising making a compound of general formula(2)( wherein, M is an alkali metal atom; N is a nitrogen atom; and R2 and R3 are each an alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl ) act on a compound of general formula(1):Ar1-S-R1 ( wherein, Ar1 is an aryl or heteroaryl; S is a sulfur atom; and R1 is an alkyl ) to obtain the corresponding objective mercapto compound of general formula(3):Ar1-SH( wherein, Ar1 is the same as mentioned in general formula(1); and SH is a mercapto group ).
