A toroid type transmission, e.g. for a vehicle, has at least two sets of friction rollers between the input and output drive discs. A control system monitors the grip of each group and detects the onset of instability via the relative spacing of the groups. This spacing is compared with reference values and enables a correction programme to be applied using hydraulic means with double action hydraulic cylinders on each group mounting.
