<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device coping with surround-sound reproduction for use in sound recording of a video camera. <P>SOLUTION: A recording device 11 is provided with; microphones M1 to Mup arranged so as to collect sounds from four or more directions; a sound synthesizing means 5 for generating four channels of a right forward sound signal R, a left forward sound signal L, a forward center sound signal C, and a surround-sound signal S by sound synthesis of sound output signals m1 to mup outputted from the microphones; a matrix encoder 6 for performing signal processing of converting the sound signals R, L, C, S to two-channel sound data Lt and Rt in accordance with a prescribed arithmetic formula; an d a sound data recording means 7 for recording the outputted sound data Lt and Rt of two channels Ltch and Rtch to a recording medium.
