摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spatial light modulation apparatus which is inexpensive, has a long life and high use efficiency of light and results in an image with high contrast, and to provide a projector having the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with: a liquid crystal layer 209 having a plurality of aperture regions AP and projecting light by modulating the light in accordance with image signals; and a microlens device 203 disposed on the light incidence side of the liquid crystal layer 209 corresponding to the aperture regions AP so as to condense the incident light to pass through the aperture regions AP. The microlens device 203 has a plurality of different focal positions f1, f2 by a plurality of annular zones R1, R2, respectively, which are concentric with the optical axis AX. The focal position f2 of one annular zone R2 in the plurality of annular zones is located nearer to the microlens device 203 than the focal position f1 of the annular zone R1 nearer to the optical axis AX with respect to one annular zone R2.
