PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of enhancing the quality of a projected picture by increasing the gradation of the projected picture, and a control method for the projection type display device. SOLUTION: The projection type display device is equipped with a light source 10 emitting light, 1st optical modulation means 51, 52 and 53 spatially modulating the light from the light source 10, a 2nd optical modulation means 30 temporally modulating the light from the light source 10, and a projection means 70 projecting the light modulated by the 1st optical modulation means 51, 52 and 53 and the 2nd optical modulation means 30.
