PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid that the opening/closing timings of an intake valve are controlled by operating angles exceeding a limit when the variable center of the operating angle of the intake valve is detected for each specified crank angle. SOLUTION: This variable valve system control device estimates the change of a center phase at a frequency for detecting the center of the operating angle, and limits the control target of the operating angle so that the opening timing of the intake valve comes within a spark-advance angle limit based on the detected center phase or an estimated value, whichever comes on the more spark-advance angle side and that the closing timing of the intake valve comes within a spark-retard angle limit based on the detected center phase or the estimated value, whichever comes on the more-spark retard angle side.
