<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent that light in which desired phase modulation is not performed is transmitted from a liquid crystal optical element for phase modulation. <P>SOLUTION: An optical element for phase modulation or an optical element for aberration compensation holds a liquid crystal layer between first and second transparent substrates, and the element has a first layer in which a plurality of electrode groups for phase modulation are formed with gap on at least one side of the first or the second transparent substrate and a second layer in which an electrode for compensation for compensating the gap of the electrode for phase modulation is provided separately from the first layer through an insulation film, they are arranged so that one part of the electrode for compensation is overlapped with the electrode for phase modulation, and width of an overlap part is made larger than width of the gap of the electrodes for phase modulation. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
