PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for reducing a necessary storage capacity of a memory of a data processing system by efficiently processing a data value shorter than one bite. SOLUTION: The data processing system 2 has a base data address region 24 and a bit-band data region 28. Memory accesses to the bit-band data region 28 are converted into memory accesses to the base data region 24. In the process of this conversion process, specific bits in the base data region 24 are picked out for access in accordance with whether that is via a read-modify-write operation or a masked read operation as appropriate.
