PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium having a high SN ratio and exhibiting satisfactory overwrite characteristics. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic alloy powder and a binder on a non-magnetic substrate having flexibility. The magnetic layer has 0.03 to 0.2μm average thickness, the ferromagnetic alloy powder has 10 to 65 nm average major axis length, the magnetic layer has 180 to 290 kA/m coercive force Hc in the recording direction, and a product Hc×SFD of the Hc and reversal field distribution SFD in the recording direction of the magnetic layer is 30 to 130 kA/m.
