PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical reader maintaining stable optical reading performance even when a strong pressurizing force is exerted on a rotary roller. SOLUTION: The optical reader 1 is provided with: a hollow and transparent rotary roller 20 disposed freely rotatably inside an external frame member 10 through a bearing member 12; and a reading optical part fixed and supported by the external frame member 10 inside the rotary roller 20, the rotary roller 20 being exposed to the outside from an opened reading window 11 formed at the external frame member 10, wherein a pair of roller receiving members 14 with the rotary roller 20 interposed therebetween are formed inside the external frame member 10, so that the neighborhoods of both end parts of the rotary roller 20 can be carried freely rotatably by the roller receiving members 14.
