PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating type magnetic recording medium realizing excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and running durability and having high reliability. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer formed by applying a magnetic coating material formed by dispersing magnetic powder and a binder resin in a solvent on a non-magnetic substrate 1, the binder resin contains a polyurethane resin having number average molecular weight of 10,000 to 100,000 and constituted of a polyester polyol comprising a glycol having an alicyclic backbone and phthalic acid, a polyester polyol comprising a 2-9C glycol and adipic acid, and a diisocyanate.
