PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce smoke during employment of heavy fuel in a cylinder injection type engine. SOLUTION: The control device judges whether or not used fuel is heavy fuel during engine operation (Step 103). When used fuel is judged not to be heavy fuel (to be light fuel), a target fuel pressure setting map for light fuel is selected to set target fuel pressure in accordance with present engine rotation speed Ne and required torque (Step 104). When used fuel is judged to be heavy fuel, a target fuel pressure setting map for heavy fuel is selected to set the target fuel pressure lower than that at employment of the light fuel within the range in which particle size of fuel is not deteriorated (Step 105). By doing so, fuel injecting time during employment of heavy fuel becomes longer than that during employment of light fuel to elongate the moving distance of a piston from start to finish of fuel injection. As a result, the quantity in which fuel injected from a fuel injection valve is accumulated as wet on the same position of the piston is reduced, which leads to reduction of smoke.
