PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for isolating a nucleic acid, which readily improves yield, purity and quality of a nucleic acid to be isolated and to obtain a nucleic acid binding carrier that readily restrains a nucleic acid from being damaged by oxidation. SOLUTION: The method for isolating a nucleic acid comprises a binding process for binding a nucleic acid to a nucleic acid binding carrier by mixing a nucleic acid-containing sample with the nucleic acid binding carrier and a chaotropic salt-containing solution for binding a nucleic acid, a cleaning process for cleaning the solution for binding a nucleic acid attached to the nucleic acid binding carrier and an elution process for eluting the nucleic acid from the nucleic acid binding carrier after the cleaning process. The binding process preferably carries out transcription treatment for transcribing the nucleic acid to the nucleic acid binding carrier and immersion treatment for immersing the nucleic acid binding carrier in the solution for binding a nucleic acid.
