PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system provided with a versatile slave unit coping with a plurality of models of master units adopting different inter-slave-unit speech systems. SOLUTION: The communication system 10 comprises: first and second slave units 30, 40 provided with two protocol compatible functions for processing first and second tuners; and the master unit 20 provided with the first or second tuner, and is configured such that when the first and second slave units 30, 40 are installed, the master unit 20 transmits a flag describing the first or second tuner to each of the slave units 30, 40, the slave units 30, 40 acquiring the flag validate a unidirectional inter-slave-unit speech function when the master unit 20 uses the first tuner or validate a bidirectional inter-slave-unit speech function when the master unit 20 adopts the second tuner.
