<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the unnecessary adhesion of toner to a secondary transfer roller etc. <P>SOLUTION: Whether the secondary transfer state stored in a non-volatile memory 133 is "indeterminate" or not is judged at the time of initial operation. If the state is not "indeterminate", it is judged whether it is a "contact" state or "the detachment → the contact state" or not. In the case of the "contact" state or the "detachment → the contact state", the detachment operation for an intermediate transfer belt 105 of a secondary transfer roller 124 is executed to perform cleaning of the intermediate transfer belt 105 and the secondary transfer contact-detachment detection is executed.
