PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a deflection scanner which prevents generation of offensive to the ease vibration noise, irrespective of the rotational state of a rotating polygon mirror, and which reduces the amount of dust adhered to the rotating polygon mirror, wherein deterioration in image quality is small. SOLUTION: The deflection scanner has a light source part 2 for emitting a light beam, a scanner motor 4 for mounting the rotating polygon mirror 5 and for performing the deflection scanning with the light beam emitted from the light source part 2 by the rotation of the rotating polygon mirror 5. An imaging means for imaging the light beam deflected by the scanner motor 4 onto a surface to be scanned, is provided with an optical box 1 for housing the light source part 2, the scanner motor 4, and the imaging means; and a lid member 10 for sealing the optical box 1, wherein the scanner motor 4 includes a drive circuit 4c for rotationally driving the rotating polygon mirror 5 and a brake means for stopping the rotation of the rotating polygon mirror 5, and wherein the brake means includes a selection means for selecting the intensity of the brake force for stopping the rotation of the rotating polygon mirror 5, according to the rotating state of the rotating polygon mirror 5.
