PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure the detection of defects of a liquid discharge nozzle in the liquid discharge device at a low cost. SOLUTION: In this method, a thermal resistance element is used as a liquid detection means and installed in a cap, then this cap is pressure-welded to a nozzle opening surface of a head to create a negative pressure space between a nozzle opening and a cap barrel, and the liquid is sucked from the nozzle opening. Thus, it is determined whether the liquid comes into contact with the thermal resistance element by detecting voltage in the thermal resistance element and assessing a detection voltage value.
