PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operability of a switch in a electric washing machine and to reduce the external force to be applied to an outer cover (an opening/closing mechanism) by operating the switch. SOLUTION: The electric washing machine has the outer cover 10 electrically driven to be opened/closed for covering a clothes slot 8a. The outer cover 10 comprises a rear half part 10a attached to a top cover 8 with a base hinge 9 to be brought up/down, and a front half part 10c connected to the front edge of the rear half part with an intermediate hinge 10b to be foldable. A control display panel 11 is mounted on the front half part 10c; and a power switch 12, an outer cover opening/closing command switch 13 and a detergent quantity detection command switch 14 are mounted on the front edge 8c of the top cover 8.
