A wireless communication terminal (100) capable of communication with other communication terminals in a direct mode of operation (DMO) is operable to transmit on one of a plurality of channels each available in a frequency efficient mode on a multi-channel RF carrier. The terminal is operable to transmit in a direct mode on one of a plurality of channels available on a plurality of RF carriers and to detect whether any of the available channels is already in use, and if it is, to derive sychronisation of a signal to be transmitted thereby from a timing structure of a signal on one of the channels already in use. <??>Also described is a system in which a plurality of such terminals operate and a method of operation by the terminals. <??>By the invention, as wireless communication units monitor and synchronise subsequent transmissions on a channel of any coupled carrier to active transmissions on a first channel of a first carrier, the system supports self-synchronisation. <IMAGE>
