A pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprises an elastomeric polymer essentially composed of a polyacrylic acid ester of an aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and a resin in an amount from 10 to 200 parts per 100 parts by weight of elastomeric polymer, said resin being substantially insoluble in water and aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents and being compatible with the polymer, and comprising a formaldehyde condensate of an aryl sulphonamide, e.g. toluene or benzene sulphonamide, a phenol, e.g. unsubstituted or lower alkyl substituted phenol, urea or melamine. Examples of the elastomeric polymer are polymethyl, polyethyl, polypropyl, polyisopropyl, polybutyl and polyisobutyl acrylate, and copolymers of the monomers thereof with a copolymerizable monomer, e.g. another acrylic ester, unsaturated hydrocarbons such as butadiene, isoprene, styrene and acrylonitrile, or vinyl ethers such as beta-chloroethyl vinyl ether, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, and vinyl halides, or vinylidene halides. Other resins which may be present are paracoumarone, polyvinyl acetate, polyamides, terpene and gasoline insoluble pinewood resin and the nitrile thereof. The adhesive composition may contain a plasticizer, e.g. methyl glycol, ethyl glycol or butyl benzyl phthalate, diphenylcresyl, tricresyl or diphenyl phosphate, which may be present in amount from 20 to 130 parts per 100 parts by weight of the elastomeric polymer. The composition may also contain from 10 to 75% by weight of the elastomeric polymer of finely-divided particulate filler, e.g. aluminium hydroxide, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate and sodium metasilicate pentahydrate. A primer coating composition is disclosed which contains from 25 to 75% of said acrylate polymer and 75 to 25% butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer containing 15 to 40% acrylonitrile.
|
