[Also in Group XXXVI] Porous plates particularly for use as accumulator separator plates are prepared by applying a layer of powdered synthetic resin by a hopper 5 to a supporting sheet 2 of paper, textile, fibre fleece or like flexible material, and passing the coated sheet through a furnace 7 to sinter the powder, and shaping and cooling the material in a water cooled press 15, 16, e.g. to form ribs R as illustrated in Fig. 2. A hydraulically operated cutter 18 may be provided for cutting the moulded material into plates. The sheet material is fed intermittently through the plant by a conveyer belt 10 and rolls 17, the operation of the belt 10, rolls 17, hydraulic press 15, 16, and cutter 18 being regulated by an electrical control system. The sheet 2 may be stripped from the sintered resin on leaving the press or it may be allowed to remain on the finished plates. The synthetic resin may consist of polyvinyl chloride, acetate, or carbazole, polystyrene, a polymer of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or an ester thereof, or polyethylene or other polymer.
