Current methods for adjusting toe on a steerable vehicle wheel require that the steering wheel be locked or that the total toe be adjusted. Additionally, if the wheels are locked, the mechanic cannot easily access the toe adjusting mechanism. The claimed invention provides a vehicle wheel alignment angle adjustment apparatus and method that permit toe angle adjustments without locking the steering wheel and provide that the toe adjustment can be made while the wheels are turned at angles that allow access to the toe adjustment mechanism. The apparatus and method use sensors that send infrared signals interpreted by a controller to indicate wheel alignment angles. Once the angles are obtained, stored, and compared with pre-adjustment toe values, an operator can then adjust the toe angle to within a desired specification without locking the wheel.
