The present invention provides a surgical cassette (22) adapted to be received by a surgical system, the cassette comprising a housing (23) and a plurality of identification tabs (24) projecting from the housing. The tabs are variably opaque to translucent, such that by varying the transmissibility of light through the tabs in a predetermined manner, the number of distinctly identifiable cassettes (22) may be increased without increasing the number of identification tabs (24).
