A unit for refining and modifying cast iron and steel contains modifying rod equipped with at least two isolated electrodes switched to the current source installed inside the rod, moreover the latter is made of a stoichiometric mixture of magnesium oxide and reducing agent. In addition the stoichiometric mixture of magnesium oxide and reducing agent contains calcium oxide, and as reducing agent it contains aluminium or ferrosilicon.
