Cells of the layer type are made by applying a plastic material 11 in a fluid state to form a lining to a mould 1 having recesses 2 with apertures 3 in their bottom surfaces. Corresponding apertures are made in the lining, and a conductive carbon-loaded plastic sheet 12 is placed in each recess. A depolarizer cake 13 impregnated with electrolyte is then added, and then a coating 16 of methyl cellulose or a sheet of paper coated with methyl cellulose, a zinc sheet 15 and a sheet of conductive plastic 14. The sheets 12, 14 may be omitted. The mould is then covered with liquid plastic 17 which, when set, becomes joined with the plastic lining, thus producing a number of cells each of which is entirely enclosed by plastic material. This is then stripped from the mould and cut up into separate cells which are stacked to form a battery. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus for coating the mould recesses with plastic material and also applying the second coating. The moulds are placed at the position a on an endless belt 5 and are passed under a nozzle 6 from which plastic material is sprayed to coat the flat surfaces of the moulds and the recesses. The moulds are then carried through a heated chamber 8 to set the plastic. At the positions b, c, d, the components of the cells are placed in position and the moulds sprayed a second time by the nozzle 7 to form the plastic covering. An electrostatic field may be applied during the spraying processes to prevent the plastic from bridging across the apertures 3. The sprayed moulds are passed through a second oven 9. In an alternative method the covering 17 is formed by a viscous sheet of plastic issuing from a wide nozzle.
