Solid polymers of gaseous olefins are prepared by contacting a bed of solid catalyst particles with the gaseous olefin in an anhydrous oxygenfree environment while subjecting the bed to centrifugal force to orient the polymer so formed outwardly from the catalyst bed and removing the polymer from the bed at a position adjacent the catalyst surface. The bed of solid catalyst may be formed on the periphery of a centrifugal basket, the outer surface of the bed being contacted with the olefin in an inert liquid medium whilst rotated by the basket. The polymer, which may be ethylene, propylene or a mixture thereof, may be removed from the catalyst bed by centrifugal force by a doctor blade or by applying ultrasonic waves thereto. The catalyst is preferably of the Ziegler type. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
