PREVENTIVE OR THERAPEUTIC AGENT FOR DIABETIC MACULOPATHY

[PROBLEMS] To provide a preventive or therapeutic agent for diabetic maculopathy that exhibits efficacy through a mechanism different from that of existing medicines and that can be taken for a prolonged period of time. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] There is provided a preventive or therapeutic agent for diabetic maculopathy, comprising as an active ingredient a compound of the general formula: (wherein X is a halogen or hydrogen atom; and R<1> and R<2> simultaneously or separately represent a hydrogen atom and unsubstituted or substituted C1-6 alkyls, or alternatively R<1> and R<2> together cooperate with a nitrogen atom, or further with another nitrogen atom or oxygen atom to represent a 5 to 6-membered heterocycle). As a particularly preferred compound, there can be mentioned (2S,4S)-6-fluoro-2',5'-dioxospiro[chroman-4,4'-imidazolidine]-2-carboxamide. Moreover, there is provided a model animal for diabetic maculopathy having edema developed in the neuroepithelial layer of retina or macula lutea by subjecting a diabetic animal to intraocular ischemia/re-perfusion treatment.
