A fuel injection system for a combustion engine comprises at least one valve (22,24) and a device (12) injecting fuel directly into a combustion space (14) bounded by an oscillating piston. The outer boundary of the fuel spray (10) is distanced from the valve. An independent claim is also included for a process using the above system.
