The method involves activating a deceleration program when a brake pedal of a vehicle is activated. A gear shifting unit is moved in its neutral position according to the activation of the deceleration program and a selection unit is moved in a selection position depending on an instantaneous speed of the vehicle, to engage a target ratio, of a gearbox, determined by a control program. An independent claim is also included for a device of activating a gearbox of a vehicle.
