<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having two or more power saving modes capable of making the judgment on which power saving mode is requested in an office having the apparatus installed therein and being shifted the power saving mode designated by operating a power saving key according to the result of the judgment. <P>SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus comprises, for example, a preheat mode and a sleep mode as the power saving modes. In the case where an automatic sleep time period is set to be long, when the power saving key is operated in a stable standby condition, the apparatus goes into the preheat mode. In the case where the automatic sleep time period is set to be short, when the power saving key is operated in the stable standby condition, the apparatus goes into the sleep mode.
