PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data editing apparatus and a method capable of preventing a memory area of a recording medium from being consumed wastefully caused by data of a defective format left in the recording medium due to the stoppage of writing a file. SOLUTION: A first file read out from the recording medium (S22) is edited (S230-S232), its edition result is written in the recording medium as a second file (S24-S28). When the prescribed conditions (S27, S39) are satisfied during write-in processing, the write-in processing is stopped (S35).
