PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adsorbent which can be produced easily and economically, has a wide range of options of the types of working components to be deposited and the size of molecules, and is capable of bearing a large quantity of them, and whose working components deposited are scarcely damaged. SOLUTION: Silica gel satisfying the following (a) to (g) is employed: (a) a fine pore volume is 0.05 ml/g or higher and 3.0 ml/g or lower; (b) a specific surface area is 100 m<SP>2</SP>/g or higher and 1,500 m<SP>2</SP>/g or lower; (c) fine pore diameter (D<SB>max</SB>) of most frequently appearing fine pores is smaller than 35 nm; (d) the volume of the fine pores having a diameter with in a range of D<SB>max</SB>±20% is 50% or more; (e) amorphous; (f) the total content of metal impurities is 500 ppm or less; and (g)δsatisfies the following expression (I): -0.0705×(D<SB>max</SB>)-110.36>δwhereinδ(ppm) is chemical shift of Q<SP>4</SP>peak in solid Si-NMR.
