Sound damping device comprises an outer wall (2) that encloses an elastic medium (3) in conjunction with an inner sound generating wall (1). The outer wall is connected to the inner wall by a spring arrangement (5) with a negative spring constant that serves to compensate the spring constant of the elastic medium. The invention also relates to a magnetic resonance tomograph with an inventive sound damping device.
