<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element which is superior in the transparency property and having few optical defects (optical unevenness or the like), and to provide a method of manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: After a liquid crystal layer 12 is formed on a glass substrate 11 having an alignment film, by applying a liquid crystal composition containing radiation polymerizable liquid crystal molecule with refractive index anisotropy, an overcoat layer 13, consisting of a transparent material, which does not have anisotropy in the refractive index is stacked on the liquid crystal layer 12. The refractive index of the overcoat layer 13 takes a value in between the ordinary light refractive index and the extraordinary light refractive index of the liquid crystal layer 12. Accordingly, the interfacial reflection generated, at the interface of the liquid crystal layer 12 on the side of the overcoat layer 13, is prevented, and the optical unevenness generated due to the orientation of the liquid crystal molecule at the interface is prevented. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
