PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which belt drive failure caused by the shape history of a belt loop, is prevented, the temperature of a belt is stably maintained by smooth rotation of the belt independently of the temperature of a pressure roller, and an appropriate fixing process can thereby be performed. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a fixing device of a belt system in which a transfer material carrying an unfixed toner image thereon is fixed by being held between the belt heated by a heat means and a pressurizing means and pressed. In the image forming apparatus, the operation of switching from the press contact state of the pressing means on the belt to the press contact release state is controlled during the operation of preheating the belt.
