Liquid crystal composition, anthraquinone compound and liquid crystal device employing the composition

A novel liquid crystal composition is disclosed. The composition comprises at least one liquid crystal and at least one compound represented by a formula (1), wherein R¹ and R² respectively represent an optionally substituted aryl group and optionally substituted heteroaryl group; R⁷ and R⁸ respectively represent an optionally substituted aryl group; R³, R⁴, R⁵ and R⁶ respectively represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent. A novel liquid crystal device comprising a pair of substrates and the composition disposed between them is also disclosed.
