PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which can prevent edge debris while stabilizing its travelling and also effectively prevent the increase in error rates. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has at least a magnetic layer which contains ferromagnetic metal powder of 20-100 nm in average major axis length or ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powder of 5-40 nm in average diameter, and a binder on a macromolecule support base. The macromolecule support base has a number average molecular weight (Mn) of 12,000-18,000, a mass average molecular weight (Mw) of 32,000-40,000, a lengthwise Young's modulus of 7.0-8.6 GPa, and a widthwise Young's modulus of 5.4-8.0 GPa.
