PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas atomizing method by which a molten metal falling in a thin film shape is reliably and efficiently reduced to metal powder, and to provide a gas atomizing apparatus used in the method. SOLUTION: In the gas atomizing method, a pair of atomizing gases G1 are blown obliquely downward and symmetrically in a thin film shape and in an approximately V shape on both lateral faces of a molten metal M falling in a thin film shape from pouring nozzles, and a pair of shielding gases G2 are made to flow vertically in a thin film shape along both ends of the molten metal M. The length of a major side of the atomizing gas G1 along the horizontal direction of the gas is larger than the length w1 of a major side of the molten metal M along the horizontal direction of the molten metal.
