PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a circular or an annular quenched range having almost uniform quenched depth to a workpiece by using laser beam. SOLUTION: A beam spot 35 on a sliding surface 13B of an inclining plate 13 irradiated with the adjusting laser beam 35, is formed as a trapezoidal shape having large width size A at the outer peripheral side of the quenching range 38 and small width size B at the inner peripheral side of the quenching range 38. In this way, when the annular quenched range 38 is formed to the sliding surface 13B of the inclining plate 13, heat input amount at the inner peripheral side of the quenching range 38, in which the irradiating time with the adjusting laser beam 35 is long, is restrained to be small and the heat input amount at the outer peripheral side of the quenching range 38, in which the irradiating time with the adjusting laser beam 35 is short, can be made to be large. Therefore, the inner peripheral side and the outer peripheral side of the quenching range 38 can almost uniformly be heated with the adjusting laser beam 35, and the quenched layer 39 having almost equal quenched depth T over the whole range can be formed.
