PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir welding apparatus capable of preventing degradation in the strength of members to be welded. SOLUTION: The friction stir welding apparatus 10 is provided with a joining tool 50 which is rotated by being pressed with first and second members 11 and 12 to be welded. The joining tool 50 is provided with a tool body 51 rotationally driven by a joining tool rotating mechanism 60 and an inner member 52 inserted into the tool body 51 movably in its axial direction. The inner member 52 is movable in a first direction A where the tool body 51 projects toward the first and second members 11 and 12 to be welded from its tip surface 51a facing the first member 11 to be welded and can be moved in a second direction B opposite to the first direction A.
